Molly’s Nursery
Ah I cannot believe I finally get to share the passion project I’ve been working on since we found out that we were having a little girl last April. I am typing this before she’s born (currently 38 weeks pregnant now!) and will publish the post once she’s here, since we’ve kept her name a secret from everyone. But here is the little sanctuary I’ve designed and brought to life for our sweet Molly McNitt. 😊
My vision was for this room to feel like stepping into a blooming flower, fit for a fairy princess baby girl. Are my hormones making me too delusionally whimsical?! 😂 I wanted to walk through a few of the key details, and explain my thought process behind everything and some of the wonderful people who help brought this dream room to life…
- The Theme: As you may have seen with our baby shower, Molly’s nickname while I’ve been pregnant has been “Thumbelina,” for the little Disney fairy born in a flower. Her emblem/symbol that we’ve used for everything has been the tulip: since my baby nursery growing up was wallpapered with tulips, and they have the sweetest meaning of love, renewal, and beauty. So it was a no brainer to lean into the subtle tulip theme for her nursery, along with my favorite color combination of pink and green (also a nod to our wedding decor colors, though these are a bit softer hues better fit for a baby!).
- The “Molly” Rug: The entire color palette of the nursery was guided by the rug I got from Southern Rugs TX, who makes the most stunning 100% wool hand-knotted authentic Modern Oushak rugs. It was important for me to have a 100% wool rug in the nursery, since I imagine she will be playing on that rug so much, so I didn’t want anything synthetic or plastic. Last spring I was looking for a statement pink and green rug for the nursery, and when I came across this one and realized it was named “The Molly,” I stopped in my tracks. It was so serendipitous and meant to be. Ordering it from their company was a wonderful experience too– it took under a week for it to ship and be delivered! The one they have listed as “The Molly” now varies slightly from mine (it’s the updated version!), but it has the same darling pink and green color palette and floral pattern that I love. I can confirm that it’s very soft too! A must for a baby’s room IMO.
- The Furniture: I really put a lot of thought and research into the furniture pieces we were going to put into the nursery, with the hopes that they would grow with Molly over the years (because let’s be real, nursery furniture is not cheap). Like I mentioned above, I’m writing this before she’s born so I can’t speak to the functionality of the pieces from a newborn standpoint (though I’ll be sure to update you once she’s here when I have more thoughts then!), but here are my first impressions: the Pottery Barn Kids recliner is absolutely gorgeous and worth the price. It reclines almost completely flat, is big enough to fit my 6’3″ husband, and is comfortable enough to sleep in. My only tip is to order it months in advance if you want one of their made-to-order fabrics like we went with (ours is the “Eco Performance Weave” in “Sage”). The Crate and Barrel dresser is also awesome. Some reviews say that the drawers don’t pull out all the way out (and they don’t– maybe only like 75% of the way), but I’ve read that that’s a safety feature so it won’t tip over when a toddler opens them. It’s sturdy, functional (I like that there are three drawers at the top!), and a good height to be used as a changing table as well. Both PB and Crate and Barrel had white-glove delivery for these pieces, which we utilized and would also highly recommend. Last major furniture piece is the crib– we went to Nestig for this since they seem to be the leaders in the convertible crib industry. Their “Wave Crib,” which we have, is Greenguard Gold Certified, has an 18 year warranty, and can convert from a mini crib to a standard-sized crib, and then a twin bed as well! The wheels are an added bonus– we can shift it around in the nursery as needed or take it out to be used as more of a bassinet if we ever wanted it in the living room, our bedroom, etc..
- The Crib Canopy: Ok, this was a true labor of love and collaborative effort between my mom, her incredible seamstress in Maine, and myself. I knew I wanted some type of canopy moment in the room (of course 😂), but couldn’t find anything I loved or that had tulips involved. I ended up with two sets of curtains, these from Pottery Barn Teen and these from Pepper Home, and decided that we would try to use the PB Teen ones to make the canopy. My mom took them to her seamstress and she ended up using excess fabric that she still had from when she made the scalloped cabanas for our wedding reception cocktail hour (!!) to make the white scalloped valence with pink piping, that really ties it all together. I’m so happy with how darling it turned out! We had it all drilled into the wall with one of these DIY canopy frame kits we found on Etsy. I also have to give a major shoutout to Taskrabbit for their help in doing the things that I couldn’t in the nursery (because I’ve been so pregnant during this process and can’t get on a ladder or do electrical work, obviously). So I hired Taskers to hang the nursery curtain rod, change out the light fixture on the ceiling, put together the crib and shelves, and bolt the canopy into the wall as well!
- The Organization: I have obviously never organized baby clothes or a nursery before, and I was overwhelmed with the number of little baby things that we were accumulating in the room (for instance I think babies require four different sizes of clothing just for the first year of their lives!), so I called in the absolute pros, Heart and Company, to tackle the space and create an aesthetic system that would make the room as organized and functional as possible. And let me tell you– they blew me away. The founder herself came to work on the space, and funny enough her name is also Molly Elizabeth (the only other person I know with the name!), so we immediately connected about that and were fast friends. And speaking of fast– Molly whipped together the absolute chaos of Amazon boxes, moving bags, gifts we had received, etc., into a streamlined and perfectly organized nursery in a matter of hours. She also came with all of the bins, drawer dividers, etc. that we would need, which made the whole experience so seamless. I show more of the before/afters in this IG highlight, and truly couldn’t recommend her more if you’re in the NY area (though she also caters to Boston and Nantucket, and travels too!).
Phew, it took a lot of research, help, and love, to create this joyful and precious little space for our Molly. I hope that by the time I share this post we are loving every minute of our time spent in here, and that she can one day look back at these photos and see what a happy room she was bought home to. 💗
