2015 New Year’s Resolutions

I’ve had a lot of downtime in the last couple of days. Being on an island with with no television, minimal plugs for charging electronics, and none of the usual distractions of my normally hectic life, I’ve had time to reflect on the past year. I’ve decided that 2014 was my favorite year so far. I joined a sorority, decided on my own major/minor, left my teenage years behind (5 months until 21!!),…

I’ve had a lot of downtime in the last couple of days. Being on an island with with no television, minimal plugs for charging electronics, and none of the usual distractions of my normally hectic life, I’ve had time to reflect on the past year. I’ve decided that 2014 was my favorite year so far. I joined a sorority, decided on my own major/minor, left my teenage years behind (5 months until 21!!), traveled with my hysterical family, made the best college friends I could EVER ask for, and started sharing it all on I Believe in Pink. I’m predicting lots of amazing adventures for the year of 2015, and I have so much to look forward to!!

So in honor of starting fresh today, I am sharing ten resolutions that have been on my mind a lot lately. Some are minor, and some are more serious, but each one has room for improvement in my life.

Go to sleep earlier.
Ok, my roommate and I are so those people who say that we are going to go to sleep at 10:30, and then all of a sudden it’s midnight and we are still vacuuming/talking/perusing Instagram/picking out our outfits for the next day… I hate to admit it, but I need eight hours of sleep to function and be productive. I need to plan accordingly so I can have everything organized for the following day ahead of time, so I can focus on actually turning out the lights around 11:00 on school nights.

Eat more vegetables.
I try to tell myself that potatoes count as my vegetable for the day. They don’t. Nor does the tomato in my caprese (I’m so guilty). I need to actually walk up to the steamed veggie section of my dining hall and put some actual vegetables onto my plate (even if it means adding a little salt to them).

Manage blogging more efficiently.
It is definitely a challenge to publish three blog posts a week. I try my best to stay consistent to Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, but often times Wednesday morning rolls around and I still have homework I need to do, which takes precedence over blog posts. I need to get at least two posts completed and scheduled on Sunday so I don’t have to worry about them during the week!

Drink less caffeine.
I usually only have one cup of coffee in the morning and another cup of tea or a diet coke around 3:00 in the afternoon (unless it’s a rough day, and I finish three ice coffees before lunch…). But I’ve heard that caffeine stunts growth, and being 5’1″, I really can’t afford to take my chances with growth.  So hopefully if I follow my first resolution to get more sleep, this 3:00 caffeine intake will be unnecessary.

Stay in touch with my friends.
I don’t get to catch up with my home and summer friends as often as I would like. I live with my friends at college so they see way too much of me, and I am in constant communication with my family, but it always seems that I don’t talk enough with my friends that go to other colleges. I’m going to make the effort to text and call them more (maybe even a little care package?!) so they know that I’m missing them.

Spend more time in the library.
On those nights when it’s cold, dark, and all I want to do is crawl into bed around 7:00 (January is a dark month, I swear..), I need to get myself to the library. It is centrally located on campus, so I really have no excuse, and I always get so much more done when I sit down in a quiet space with a big open table to lay out my work. I swear, my dorm is literally the most distracting place for me, so the silent section (ok, the whisper section) of the library is a must.

Spend less time on my phone.
Things I shouldn’t be doing at the library: rearranging my Pinterest boards, untagging myself in unattractive pictures on FB, sending funny Buzz Feed links to my friends, or going through each and every Snapstory on my feed… I need to PUT MY PHONE DOWN when I am in the library in work mode. Ain’t nobody got time to be a multitasking social media maven while writing an A-worthy paper on 17th century transatlantic Spanish/American literature. #truth.

Do one kind act a day.
We all probably do dozens of kind things each day. But it’s rare, at least for me, to go out of my way, to the point that it disrupts my daily routine, to lend someone a hand and help them out. That’s why 2015 should be the year of random acts of kindness and surprise pick-me-ups for all the people I love in my life.

Celebrate the little things.

Ok, so I already take any chance to get dressed up, pop champagne, and celebrate (when you have a collection of cocktail napkins for each holiday in your dorm room, that’s when you know.) But this year I want to really take the time to slow down, appreciate the small victories and happy things, and live in the moment. This idea of being present has proven to be the hardest thing for me to do, because it calls for me to stop planning and thinking ahead, but we all need a little spontaneity and celebration in our life, don’t we?

Be bold.
Being a girl who wears hot pink as a neutral and believes that the bigger the hair, the better, I don’t usually blend into the crowd. But, I think every girl (especially in college) can be a little more confident and own their personality/bod/intelligence. I think this stems from telling your girlfriends how fab they are, and then letting them flaunt their stuff. You go girl.

I want to hear your new year resolutions as well! Here’s to strutting our way into the new year– one pink outfit at a time.
