The Surprise Post-Engagement Party
Last week I shared all about how we got engaged, including the lead up, the proposal, and all of the details on the ring! Now on to what happened after the proposal… and the people who made it such a special celebration.
Right after Johnny proposed and we spent some time together on the beach, he told me we were going to meet up with our families. I just assumed we were going to meet our parents and sisters (I had already asked if his brother was there and Johnny said no and that we would just Facetime him). But in all honesty I was still shaking from the proposal and so overwhelmed that I wasn’t clear-headed enough to think about anything else.
Once we collected our belongings (I had brought a bunch of stuff because I thought we were taking Christmas card photos and I had planned to change right after), we left the beach and got into the car we drove over.
We drove through John’s Island and ended up pulling up to one of our neighbor’s (who in hindsight I learned allowed us to use their house for the surprise!! They are the best). Johnny led me out of the car and into the backyard where I was immediately overwhelmed by music blasting, photos of Johnny of me everywhere, ring-shaped pool floats filling the pool, a full bar and pink and green tablescape, but most importantly, our favorite people.
As you can see by our reactions, we definitely freaked out the whole neighborhood with our shrieks and hugs and Liberty leaping all over the place. There were even a few surprises– Johnny’s brother and wife had been there the whole time, and my best friend from college (my Big!) also flew in with her boyfriend to be there for the celebration. They had all planned strategic decoys on Instagram, showing that they were in other places, that I had of course seen, so I truly was shocked.
The night went on with lots of painkiller cocktails, a delicious dinner that my stomach was too excited to really even eat, a Conga-line around the pool, lots of staring at the ring 😂, and meaningful toasts by our dads. We ended it with closing down the beach bar at John’s Island and sitting by the fire there, espresso martinis in hand.
I remember feeling like I was floating the whole night– just so giddy happy and in awe of the love and excitement we felt from everyone. My favorite part about Johnny, outside of his personality and our relationship, is his family and the friends we’ve made together, and this night captured that all in a uniquely perfect way.
