I wish I could put into words the amount of happiness, craziness, and love I’ve felt in the last month and a half. Joining a sorority–and not just any sorority– joining Kappa Alpha Theta has been one of the best experiences I’ve ever had.
I know this post is kind of long, but I just had to share every amazing moment of recruitment, new member month, and my BIG!!!
This is the recruitment t-shirt that everyone wore the first night of rush!
Recruitment week was composed of four different events, each on a different night. The first event was “Go Greek,” where we all wore these t-shirts ^^, the second event was “Philanthropy Night,” which was casual attire (sorry I don’t have a picture from this night!), the third event was “Sisterhood Night,” which was business casual, and the last night was “Preference Night,” and we wore cocktail dresses (pictures below).
This is the night we had to make our final decisions regarding which sorority we wanted to “pref!” I accidentally wore Theta’s colors, black and gold. I think it was a sign that I was destined to go Theta.. My mom says now, “black and gold are the new pink and green!”
Bid Day!!! Once my friends and I found out that we got a bid from Theta, we dressed in our craziest attire and literally sprinted to the Theta cottage! We celebrated with our pledge class, took a lot of pictures, ate Carytown burgers, and then all went bowling!
When I got back to my dorm after bid day, this kite sign was on my door!
(plus, fun fact: Tory Burch was a Theta at the University of Pennsylvania!)
Our bid day picture!!
These are the goodies I received from my mom right after bid day! She was visiting Vanderbilt University with my little sister and they bought these for me at a local boutique there. My favorite is the Lilly Pulitzer tumbler. I love Lilly’s theta print– it has kites and pansies all over it– Theta’s symbols!
So for a month after bid day, we had a temporary Big Sister each week. We went out to dinner with them, hung out, and they showered us with gifts! The last week of the new member month we got our permanent Bigs, but for the entire week it was a secret as to who it was. I knew that I really, really wanted one girl to be my Big–we had pretty much already decided that that’s how it was going to work out– but she texted me at the beginning of the week and said that she was really sorry but we hadn’t been matched together. I was really upset (just ask my friends, I obsessed over it all week long…), and therefore spent the entire week decoding handwriting and looking for clues as to who my big was. But I was given mixed signals and she kept telling me that I would love my Big no matter what. These are the presents my Big left outside of my door leading up to the day that she was revealed!
My gifts included: Theta stationary, a “You are the salt to my margarita” sign, pink letters with gold glitter, cupcakes, Aloe (I had just gotten back from Puerto Rico and was a little burned..), and Theta shirts!!! I remember thinking that whoever my Big was, she definitely knew all of my favorite things!
I still have a thin coat of gold stars and glitter all over my dorm.. I don’t hate it.
So… on the day that my Big was revealed I left my dorm for a little and when I came back my room looked like this:
There were streamers, balloons, notes, signs, gold stars, glitter, shirts, gifts, and monograms EVERYWHERE. It was beyond amazing. Beyond.
FINALLY our Bigs were revealed at the event, “Spark in the Dark.” We were led into a dark room with our eyes closed as everyone sang, and then they turned on the lights and my Big was standing in front of me! It was exactly who I had wanted it to be. She had lied to me alll week long and got everyone to tell me that it wasn’t her. I was so surprised. There was a whole lot of shrieking, crying, and hugging. I’ve never felt so overwhelmingly happy!
The pictures say it all…
This is my absolutely gorgeous and amazing family! My big has a “twin” whose little sister is one of my best friends (she is the other girl in white)! So technically we are cousins– it could not have worked out any better!
Here are a few pictures of my Big and I… we may have already been in love even before she was my Big… but now I love her even more.
This last picture pretty much sums up our relationship… she’s basically my other half in the way that she’s Lilly Pulitzer/monogram obsessed, loves to dance, laugh, and have a good time, and is an overall hilarious/ridiculous person. I mean, she’s perfect for me.
I hope you enjoyed reading about my rush experience! I’ve since been fully initiated into Kappa Alpha Theta, and am so honored to be a member! Please share your sorority stories with me– I would love to hear them!
